Our Ethos

In an unregulated industry, Kin Probate is a name you can trust. Originally established by an experienced solicitor, Kin Probate is based on tried and tested principles of accountability and transparency. Our aim is to be the genealogist of choice; the long-term partner solicitors and the public sector turn to when looking to overcome problems arising from the death of an individual.

We provide a range of services, some of which are free, all of which are designed to resolve problems both in the UK or abroad.

We look to cultivate a long-term relationship that is based on candour and understanding.

As part of this programme we look to meet and share our expertise and knowledge as far as possible through our Kinform programme.

Our Current Charity: ActionAid

We know the importance of ‘giving something back’. Our principal charity this year is ActionAid – a charity that seeks to protect vulnerable girls and women in the developing countries.

Services for solicitors and the public sector

At The Helm: James Gartland

James worked for over 10 years for large national law firms. He combines a zeal for justice with a keen interest in social history and genealogy.

Outside of work James is a committed husband and father, keeping a close eye on his own kin, a young son and daughter. When the chance arises James is keen to don his lycra and take on the tarmac on his bike. Or attempt to blast out Bohemian Rhapsody on his beloved piano.

Desert Island Discs

Favourite book: Count of Monte Cristo (Alexander Dumas)

Favourite film: Casablanca

Favourite music: Impossible question but Bob Dylan is hard to resist.

Consultant Researcher: Michala Hulme

Michala Hulme is an experienced professional genealogist and a course leader in history at Manchester Metropolitan University.

With over 60 appearances on local radio to her name and having featured on the popular BBC show, Heir Hunters and in several newspapers and magazines, such as the Daily Mail, Manchester Evening News and Who Do You Think You Are? Michala is well known for her skills in genealogy.

Michala has an enduring fascination with the ‘grim’ side of living in a Victorian city – particularly crime and street gangs – and has published books and edited magazines (History & Heritage North-West Magazine) on the subject.

When she is not working on the above she is striving to maintain alpha position amongst her own gang – of three dogs, four sheep, two ponies and a chicken on her small-holding in Cheshire.

Researcher: Hazel Saunders

Hazel joined Kin Probate in 2019. Having undertaken genealogy projects as a pastime for several years Hazel didn’t hesitate to switch careers when the opportunity arose. She thoroughly enjoys the investigative nature of her job.

She regularly gets involved in raising money for charity and this has led Hazel to undertake a variety of projects most notably helping to build an orphanage in South Africa.

At home Hazel is kept busy with her two children and uses any spare time to indulge in crafting or reading.

Researcher: Laura Sanchez

Laura joins Kin Probate having obtained a degree in Spanish and Italian at Leicester University and more recently teaching Spanish, French and German at secondary school level. Laura has spent a number of years living and teaching in Latin America where she now lives with her Mexican husband and two young children.

Laura enjoys a challenge. With a keen interest in research and family history, she welcomed the opportunity to work for Kin Probate.
